Welcome to A Visionary's Outlook, a place where I share lessons, from traversing this journey of what we call "life".
The Perspective
The Pareto Principle (20/80 Law)
This states that for basically all sectors of life, 20% of input leads to 80% of the output. In other words, a small percentage of causes have an outsized effect. (if you focus on the right things)
My Story
I used to hear this all the time but I never really understood it, thus I never applied it.
I recently just started applying this principle, and it shocks me to how it still holds true to this day.
I will be covering two realms, Physical exercise and relationships.
Physical exercise:
For the past year, my sessions at the gym averaged 1.5 - 2 hours.
Now, it's around 45 minutes to 1 hour, with the same growth.
How does this happen?
It turns out that one set to failure, prioritizing form and time under tension is equal to doing 2 - 3 mediocre sets per exercise.
With this, I get less brain fog and I don't despise going to the gym as much, because I know that I only have one set to give it my all, leaving no reserves.
Relationships:
Prioritizing people and conversations.
I used to be an absolute social animal, just getting to get acquainted with everyone and talking to them about various topics.
I'm not saying that this is a bad thing, but I realized that it was a waste of my finite time and energy to talk about mundane things such as gossip and things that have no point.
Now, I do my best to make sure every conversation provides insight or helps one party, and it has done wonders for my mindset.
Prioritizing quality people has allowed me to truly go deep with some of my friends, forging actual relationships and brotherhoods. It's an actual joy to know that you have people you can depend on, not playing dumb games like “How long should I wait to respond to seem busy?”
Lessons & Application
The Pareto Principle is one we should take to heart, to focus on the vital few that makes the difference rather than the trivial junk. Whether it’s in the gym, in relationships, or any area of life, the quality of your efforts can often outweigh the quantity.
Here’s how you can take action:
⥤ Identify the High-Impact Actions
Think about areas where you might be putting in the work to menial results. Look for THE parts of your daily life where focused 20% of effort could deliver 80% of the results. Identify what actually moves the needle for you and start focusing on that.
⥤ Refine Your Efforts
For physical goals, like fitness, focus on quality over quantity. A few sets executed with intention, intensity, perfect form, until failure can outperform hours spent in the gym. For relationships, look at where you spend your social energy. Prioritize time with people who inspire, support, and challenge you to grow. (Iron Sharpens Iron)
⥤ Set Boundaries and Priorities
The 80/20 rule is also about protecting your time. Remember: You can get anything back, but time. Ask yourself: Is this worth the energy I’m giving it? Throw away out everything that holds you back from the person you want to become. Burn the boats.
⥤ Check In Regularly
The 20% that drives your success can change as you improve. Do a weekly, monthly and yearly check-in where you evaluate where your time and energy are going, and adjust to what suits your life. Reflection is how we grow. Ask yourself, Am I putting effort into what actually brings value?
It goes back to the saying, work smarter, not harder. When you focus on what truly matters, you will see yourself in places where you would've never imagined.
Remember, its who you become on the journey.
Others.
